And finally... meet Scotland’s oldest bricklaying apprentice

Robert Wilson

At 51, Robert Wilson from Prestonpans is showing that determination, passion, and hard work can open doors at any stage of life.

Recognised by CITB as Scotland’s oldest construction apprentice, Robert is celebrating Scottish Apprenticeship Week by sharing his journey and inspiring others to follow their dreams.

Robert lives, works, and trains in East Lothian, gaining hands-on experience as a bricklayer apprentice with Persimmon Homes East Scotland while studying at Edinburgh College. Having spent 15 years as a bricklayer’s labourer with Persimmon, he has long admired the craft. Now, through the company’s apprenticeship programme, he is fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a fully qualified bricklayer.

And finally... meet Scotland’s oldest bricklaying apprentice

Never stepping foot on site without his trusty trowel – a gift from his granddaughter inscribed with “Papa: the best bricklayer in town” – Robert has even hosted politicians and party leaders on Persimmon sites, proudly sharing his passion for construction.

On site, Robert helps deliver high-quality, energy-efficient homes, contributing to East Lothian’s housing supply and ensuring families can move into properties built to the highest standard. He balances practical training, college studies, and family life, showing that dedication and passion know no age limit.

Robert said: “Becoming a bricklayer has been a dream for as long as I can remember. Every day on site, I’m reminded that it’s never too late to follow your passion – and knowing that the homes I help build will be where families start their lives makes it all worthwhile.”
