Barratt to help deliver delayed primary school for Dundee’s Western Gateway
Dundee’s long‑awaited Western Gateway primary school has taken a significant step forward, with Dundee City Council confirming that preparatory survey work is now underway at Newmill of Gray.
The school, originally promised for August 2025 and partly funded through a £5,000 “roof tax” paid by new homeowners, has faced years of delay due to rising construction costs and an unsuccessful bid for Scottish Government support. Residents have increasingly pressed for clarity, with Labour MSP Michael Marra writing to council leader Mark Flynn last week seeking answers on the project’s future.
The council has now confirmed that it is working closely with Barratt Homes to coordinate the school’s delivery alongside the wider housing development. Under the current programme, the new primary is expected to open in August 2029.
The project will be procured through a single‑supplier national framework, with Robertson Construction appointed as contractor. A dedicated project board will be established to oversee progress and engage with local stakeholders, while the council prepares to submit a formal planning application.
City Growth and Infrastructure convener Councillor Steven Rome said the authority remained committed to delivering the long‑promised facility.
“The council has been working hard to deliver a primary school for the Western Gateway. It has been important to liaise closely with the developer to coordinate delivery of the housing development and the primary school. I am pleased at the continued progress which is being made on this project.
“The council has allocated £25 million to the school in its capital plan, and that illustrates how committed we are to this hugely important development for the Western Gateway. I look forward to the new school taking shape and becoming a real focus of community life for the future.”
Barratt & David Wilson Homes also welcomed the latest movement.
“We are pleased to confirm that work on our two Dundee West developments will be commencing shortly,” a spokesperson said. “We continue to work closely with Dundee City Council to support the delivery of the proposed new school, which will provide an important educational resource and become a valued part of the Western Gateway community.
“We remain committed to engaging with the council and local stakeholders as the project progresses, and to ensuring that the development contributes positively and sustainably to the local area.”
