Major construction and regeneration progress marked across Aberdeen
Aberdeen's beachfront
Aberdeen City Council has reported significant progress across multiple capital projects under its £150 million City Centre and Beach Masterplan, as well as a series of community, education, and heritage developments citywide.
Key works continue at the beachfront, Union Street Central, and the Castlegate, with the Council reaffirming its commitment to transforming the city into a more vibrant, accessible destination for residents, visitors, and business.
At the beach, the Phase A Beach Park and Events Park are both progressing toward practical completion in summer 2026. Superstructure and fit-out works are ongoing, alongside hard landscaping. The completed Broadhill area, opened in July 2025, has already proved popular as a new public space.
Union Street Central
The Union Street Central streetscaping, reallocating space to prioritise active travel and public transport, has faced programme delays due to unforeseen utility and ground conditions, with completion now forecast for spring to summer 2026.
At the Castlegate, plans for major public realm and streetscape improvements, linked to the Silver City Heritage and Place Programme, are currently paused pending utility works. Construction is expected to start Q1 2026 and run to summer 2027.
The council has also approved £2.1m toward the £5.4m Silver City Heritage and Place Programme, delivering grants for traditional building repairs, heritage skills training, and public realm upgrades around the east end of Union Street and the Castlegate. Funding support comes from Historic Environment Scotland and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Harlaw
Priority projects include restoration of Justice Street shopfronts, Peacock’s Printworks, and Seabury House, alongside new community greenspaces and gardens.
Updates from the council’s wider capital programme include:
- Bridge of Don Recycling Centre – opened October 2025, providing a new north-side waste facility.
- Bairns’ Hoose – completed July 2025 and operational from August.
- Bucksburn Swimming Pool – construction underway, completion expected spring 2026.
- Inchgarth Community Centre extension – on site since April 2025, completion due spring 2026.
- Harlaw Road Pavilion – main works to start autumn 2025, completing spring 2026.
Riverbank
Work continues across seven school sites. The £30.3m Riverbank Primary School officially opened in October 2025, while extensions or refurbishments progress at Ferryhill Primary, Harlaw Academy, St Machar Academy, Bucksburn Academy, St Peter’s RC Primary, and the replacement Hazlehead Academy. The new Hazlehead building is expected to open summer 2028, with full site completion by summer 2029.
Across all projects, the council noted ongoing risks from external market factors including inflation, supply chain disruption, energy costs, and global trade instability, which may impact delivery timelines and budgets.
